Obesity a Medical Problem?  

Obesity is considered as a world-wide epidemic disease due to its high prevalence. In addition to obese individuals suffering social discrimination and an impaired quality of life, obesity has been associated with increased risk of life-threatening diseases, including hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure, and certain cancers.

Being overweight and obese places you at increased risk for developing a number of serious health problems, including:

  1. Heart disease and stroke - The leading causes of death and disability for both men and women in the United States.

  2. Diabetes - Type 2, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

  3. Cancer - Increased risk of cancer of the uterus, gallbladder, cervix, ovary, breast, and colon in women; increased risk of cancer of the colon, rectum, and prostate in men.

  4. Sleep apnea - Interrupted breathing during sleep.

  5. Osteoarthritis - Wearing away of the joints, which often affects the knees, hips, and lower back.
